Secondary Conditions for VA Disability Claims

Browse 47 service-connected conditions and discover which secondary conditions you may be eligible to claim. Filing secondary claims is one of the most effective ways to increase your combined VA disability rating.

What are secondary VA disability claims?

A secondary condition is a new disability caused or worsened by a condition you are already service-connected for. For example, if you have service-connected PTSD that causes sleep apnea, you can file sleep apnea as a secondary claim. The VA requires a medical nexus letter linking the two conditions.

Secondary claims do not require proof of an in-service event — only a connection to an existing service-connected disability.
